This course focuses on learning strategies to help students become better, more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. The course helps students build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond.
By the end of this course, students will: • identify and use a variety of literacy skills and strategies to improve reading, writing, and oral communication in everyday contexts; • identify and use a variety of numeracy skills and strategies to improve their practical application of mathematics in everyday contexts; demonstrate an understanding of learning skills and strategies required for success in school.
Students will get to learn more about:
- Personal Knowledge and Management Skills: use a self-assessment process to develop a personal profile for use in career development planning and evaluating and applying the personal-management skills and characteristics needed for school success, document them in their portfolio, and demonstrate their use in a variety of settings.
- Interpersonal Knowledge and Skills: identify and describe the knowledge and skills necessary for successful interpersonal relations and teamwork and assessing their interpersonal and teamwork skills and strategies and explain how those skills requiring further development affect their learning.
- Exploration of Opportunities: use a research process to locate and select relevant career information from a variety of sources for inclusion in a portfolio and identifying current trends in society and the economy and describe their effect on work opportunities and work environments.
This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals for future learning, work, and community involvement. Students will assess their interests, skills, and characteristics and investigate current economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores postsecondary learning and career options, prepares students for managing work and life transitions, and helps students focus on their goals through the development of a career plan.
